Dog18-18

A 22 degree sundog or 'Mock Sun' on february 26th 2007 taken from my back yard in Maghera, N. Ireland at 15.30 UT. The sundog was a bright, compact, well defined yellow - white patch located 22 degrees east of the sun among a faint 22 degree halo. A long white tail can be seen stretching away from the dog to the left (east) - this is a section of Parhelic circle. The same phenomena was visible to the west of the sun (out of frame) and an 'Upper Tangent Arc' completed the scene on top of the halo. This was the best daylight atmospherics display I have seen this year and it reminded me of the spectacular displays which appeared during spring and summer of 2006 - I hope we get a repeat! Lovely Summer like day - hard to believe it is technically still Winter!
