The 2007 NLC season turned out to be my most successful to date with 31 nights of NLC displays (not including 3 or 4 other suspected displays) observed and imaged despite having many nights clouded out, so there where many more present in the sky. This is probably some kind of record for N. Ireland. This was a very active season indeed and taking into account world wide sightings it was obvious that there where NLCs visible on almost every night during the entire season. I noticed a trend in which nearly all the spectacular displays appeared in the sky at midnight or later, and at their best before dawn when most people missed them. The morning displays far out numbered the evening displays.

The full range of NLC structure was observed, from simple veils to awesome complex patterns consisting of most, or even all NLC types and even several with unknown structure. Many of the displays were bright in the 4 to 5 range. Five of these were all-sky displays where only the southern horizon was untouched by these glowing wisps of cloud. In my opinion the most memorable and spectacular displays were those of June 6/7th and July 8/9th. I broke my own private record by observing more NLCs this season than on any other. However, I still think the 2006 season was the most incredible in my memory for the monster complex displays visible in the evening sky. Perhaps it was the shock of these immense structures seen for the first time that made these stand out so vividly in my mind. Have a look at the 2006 gallery and decide for yourself.
