The great sun pillar of April 2005. This sudden omen in the sky caught the eyes of many skygazers and members of the public alike. It manifested in the western sky without warning after sunset and began as a purple beam which changed to a stunning and eerie crimson red as the sun dropped further. It was visible for some time and was truely breathtaking like a biblical sign in the sky. I can only imagine what ancient observers would have made of it. This is the most remarkable sun pillar I have ever witnessed! The image does not do it justice at all. I will never forget this pillar of blood in the western sky!
