AUTUMN SOLSTICE SUNSET

HOME

Sunset

Dramatic sunset cloudscape taken on September 21st 2009 from my front garden in Maghera, N. Ireland just hours before the Autumn Solstice. The sky was amazing with rich colours of orange, brown, pink, and purple covering the entire western dome of the sky. It was actually dusk and very dark (street lights on and Jupiter visible in E) yet the Sun, which was just on the horizon and not visible, still illuminated these clouds to dramatic effect. This is looking W using a short time exposure at ISO400. The motion of the clouds are evident. This scene happened when a weak frontal system broke in time to let the Sun through the small gaps to produce this effect.
